Virtual Winter Dance Concert

December 17th & 19th

Please join us for the first Virtual Winter Dance Concert!

This year is like no other, which calls for a winter production like nothing the Dance Department has attempted before. In considering how to provide opportunities for our students, we knew we would have to look beyond our comfort zone, reimagining the concept of performance, and opening ourselves to a more intimate form of expression. With the realization that our students need an outlet to process and articulate all that they are experiencing, we invited four exciting guest choreographers to create works in collaboration with our dancers and students from BSA’s very own Film and Visual Storytelling Department. Our guests, Maleek Washington, Janice Rosario, Kameron Saunders, and BSA alum Da’Shown Rawl (’14), embraced this challenge, creating compelling works that explore navigating the chaos of these times, the value of education, forging new identities, and discovering the superhero within.

The link to view the performance will be live on Thursday, December 17th at 7pm and Saturday, December 19th at 2pm. Click on the button below to view at these times. Enjoy!

“The current pandemic has forced us all to slow down, whether we wanted to or not, and take a deeper look at ourselves. Some of us have had to question our humanity and livelihoods during this time. Recognizing that the hustle and bustle of our everyday lives can sometimes render us a bit incognizant of both simple kindnesses and our lives passing us by if we don’t stop to smell the flowers. As you will hear in the work Alonzo King, Artistic Director of LINES Ballet, says ‘…stillness. we have to be quiet. we have to be still and listen to the roar of our own original song that’s inside everybody. we leave it. we leave it and what are we chasing? we’re chasing something that we think is going to make us happy and it always disappoints.’ BLUR is a contemporary look at that day to day speed and awareness. I want to give a special thank you to the students of BSA who dove in wholeheartedly to communicate this message with me as well as to Alonzo King for his generosity.” -Kameron Saunders

Thank You

The BSA Dance Department extends its deepest gratitude towards the following people for making this production possible:

Beatriz Bufrahi for giving us the opportunity to collaborate with the immensely talented students of the Film and Visual Storytelling Department, and facilitating the process along every step of the way.

Alonzo King, Artistic Director of LINES Ballet, for his generosity in allowing us to include his poignant words in his own voice.

The Reverend Christopher Pyles and the Grace & St. Peter’s Episcopal Church community for their generosity in allowing us to film on location in their beautiful playground.

Pat Galluzzo for always making ALL things possible, ensuring that we would be able to share this project with our valued community.

Norah Worthington for masterfully leading the costume design process and personally delivering costumes to our dancers.

Katiana Weems for wielding her film editing prowess to compile everything at the very end to create a beautifully cohesive production.

Finally, and most humbly, we thank the many, many family members and friends who filmed our dancers on location throughout the Baltimore region. Without you, none of this would have been possible!
