Admissions

Overview

Students are selected for admission to the Baltimore School for the Arts in a process designed to identify students with the potential for a career in the arts.  Auditions are conducted in January for fall enrollment and are open to eighth and ninth graders.  Admission is based solely on an audition or portfolio review in the student’s art discipline, conducted by the school’s professional arts faculty.  Nothing else is used to determine admission—transcripts, grades, test scores, and letters of recommendation are not considered in the admissions process.  By focusing solely on the audition or portfolio review, BSA aims to encourage all students interested in the arts to apply to the school.

"I was an inner-city kid, and the school exposed me for the first time to a number of cultures. That helped to break down biases. From 8 to 4, it was our own little utopia."
