FAQS

Q: Who is eligible to audition for the BSA?

A: All 8th and 9th grade students who demonstrate talent and interest in the arts can audition. Most of our students come from Baltimore City. Others come from surrounding counties.

Q: What are the entrance requirements?

A: You’ll audition and interview with instructors from your field of interest — art, film, music, stage design and production, theatre, or dance. Admission is based solely on the results of this process; no academic criteria are used. Auditions are held in January for admission to the school for the following year. Students are selected on the basis of their potential for a career in the creative workforce. Of the 1,000 or so 8th and 9th graders who audition every year, about 115 are accepted for enrollment.

Q: How do I apply for an audition?

A: Applications for the 2023-24 school year is now available here. If you have any questions about the application process please email highschoolauditions@bsfa.org.

Q: May I audition in more than one area?

A: Yes, you may audition in two areas. If you are accepted into both, you must choose between them before enrolling.

Q: Are there academic requirements for admission?

A: No. You’ll be admitted solely on the basis of your audition and the interview process. Once admitted, you’ll take a few tests so we can place you in our college-prep program. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, we also have an extensive academic support system in place to help all of our students find success in the classroom.

Q: Will I be well prepared for college when I graduate?

A: Absolutely. While some of our graduates launch a career directly after graduation, about 98 percent go on to higher education every year. Our alumni attend the nation’s most distinguished colleges, universities, art schools, liberal arts colleges, and conservatories. Our six-year college graduation rate is 81 percent, well above the national average.

Q: What if I decide not to pursue a career in the arts?

A: We understand that not all of our graduates will go on to careers as full-time artists. But the discipline, time management, and resilience you’ll build here will help you be successful no matter what field you choose to go into.

Q: How long is the school day?

A: Growing as an artist and also stretching your mind takes time. We have an extended school day, from 8:15 am to 4:15 pm. You’ll spend four periods a day in academic classes and four in arts classes. After-school rehearsals and studio time are often required.

Q: What is the tuition?

A: We are part of Baltimore City Public School System, so tuition is free to Baltimore City residents. Students living outside the city must pay tuition. For the 2023-24 school year, tuition is $10,000 per year. Please note that it is subject to change each year.

Q: Does the school provide transportation for students?

A: City students may qualify for free or reduced-fare bus passes. We’re conveniently located near several main bus lines and the light rail service.
