We Need Your Help!
Become a Sponsor of our 2011-2012 Family Artreach Performance Series and help us to provide arts opportunities for children and families in Baltimore. Sponsors will receive tickets to performances and opportunities to bring groups to BSA for a variety of events and/or matinees including The Nutcracker "Behind the Scenes" Party (December 15) where holiday snacks are offered and children from some of Baltimore's Charitable Groups have the opportunity to mingle with The Nutcracker cast and Santa Claus. Sponsors will also be featured on our website and in programs and educational guides that accompany each event.
How We're Reaching Children in Baltimore with Opportunities in the Arts
- TWIGS (October-April): Since 1983, the centerpiece of BSA's outreach to City Schools' students has been our free after-school and Saturday arts instruction program, TWIGS. Over the past 25+ years, this program has enabled thousands of City Schools' students to receive arts instruction free-of-charge. In 2011-12, 700+ students in grades 2-8 from close to 100 City Schools will take classes in music, art, theatre, stage production or dance. For more information about TWIGS visit its page on this website!
- Free Matinee Performances are scheduled throughout the year for children in Baltimore's public middle and elementary schools. These matinees are specially developed programs built on the work of BSA's pre-professional students who both perform and narrate. Matinees offer exposure to ballet and modern dance, classical and jazz music, opera, as well as the visual arts through a special gallery tour program called "First Look." For many of the children who attend, this will be their first experience at a live performance or in an art gallery, and one that can help to foster an understanding and appreciation of the arts. Pre- and post-performance educational materials are distributed to teachers and students for all the matinees.
- Lecture/Demo Run-outs to City Schools that are similar to the matinees but on a more intimate scale. Small ensembles of high school musicians, theatre and stage production students, and/or dancers will visit Baltimore City elementary and middle schools to perform short works designed for arts exposure and education. Q & A's with students as well as an opportunity to hold and play instruments are a part of this program and educational materials are distributed to teachers and students.
- Community Partnerships: BSA also reaches City Schools students through collaborative work with other cultural organizations in Baltimore, including: Ages on Stages - our student actors perform scenes that address critical issues and tour City Schools as well as nursing homes and senior centers; Red Cross Players - our student actors develop and then perform educational programs in City Schools (this year on Disaster Preparedness); Maryland Historical Society - BSA students research, write, and perform educational historical pieces for students visiting the MdHS; and dancers and actors regularly perform in Music-for-Youth programs for schools at the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.
