We were thrilled to present this 19th century piece, originally created for the Russian ballet by the renowned French choreographer Marius Petipa. It was beautifully restaged by BSA dance instructors Bat Udval and Evgenia Singur, who studied and performed with the Bolshoi. The two brought the work to the attention of the BSA, and we were honored to premiere Cavalry Halt for the first time in its entirety on the stage of the Schaefer Ballroom. The work featured romance, comedy, folk dance, and classical ballet in a charming story set in a small Austrian village. The music for the ballet was composed by Johann Armsheimer and the score also includes Johann Strauss’ Radetsky March. Beautiful period costumes were been designed by the BSA’s talented stage production students.
Cavalry Halt was the concluding piece in the BSA’s Spring Dance Concert, which will also featured George Balanchine’s Stars and Stripes pas de deux, staged by another well-known choreographer who studied with Balanchine, John Clifford. Other pieces include contemporary choreography by John Clifford, modern choreography by BSA dance faculty member Tony Wilson, Spanish dance choreography by Susan Wince,k and a self-choreographed piece by the BSA Dance Class of 2012.
